[Flash-info] a new decree on "the origin of pork, sheep and poultry meat, in catering" notified to the European Commission

Food Hygiene News 12 April 2021

A new decree on the origin of meats of pig, sheep and poultry species was notified by the European Commission on November 18, 2019 and thus modifies the old decree relating to the labeling of the origin of these meats in catering. .

Thus, restaurateurs must inform the guests of their establishments in the countries of breeding and slaughter of meats from the aforementioned species.

This decree concerns meats bought raw by restaurateurs. Meats already prepared or cooked are not affected by this decree. The information concerning these meats can be transmitted to the guests either by posting, or by indicating it on the cards and menus, or on any other medium. At this time, two cases can arise:

  • if the birth, breeding and slaughter of the animal from which the meat is derived takes place in the same country, the restaurateur will inform the consumer as follows: "Origin: name of the country"
  • if the birth, breeding and slaughter of the animal from which the meat is derived do not take place in the same country, the restaurant owner will inform the consumer as follows: "Raised: (name of the country or countries of ’breeding) and slaughtered: (name of the country of slaughter) "

This decree will come into force on April 1, 2020.
